Photographer,  artist and retoucher Erik Johansson explains why he uses Windows 8, 64 GB of memory and 4 hard drives (without monitors). The final cost around  $3,676.46 against $6000 of a Mac Pro with less components, but more cool:
Alright, nerd alert. This video is about building a computer specialized for Photoshop and I wanted to share my thoughts about it.

To me it's important that the tools are not in the way of the creativity which is why I want to have a very powerful system that always runs smoothly. But why building a computer yourself? Well, you can customize it to your needs, it's cheaper considering the performance you get and it's fun making something on your own! Maybe it's not for everyone but I thought it could be interesting to share my thoughts on building a computer optimized for Photoshop.

Misleading title at best. The Mac Pro was not aimed at photoshop users.

Not misleading in the least, actually. Mac touts all their their desktops as superlative Photoshop machines. This blows them away at half the cost.
