Make Your Subject Stand Out From The Background

On this episode of Outside The Softbox, we'll learn how to properly light your subject so they stand out from the background.

You may find yourself in a situation where an outfit is the same color as your background, so it's always good to know how to get around those tricky situations.

Here’s a behind the scenes look at my latest post with @alleesutton. For this shot I was using the 3 light kit from @paulcbuffinc with a gridded 47” octabox as my key light and another gridded strip box as my main rim light. My 3rd light was a 64” silver umbrella that I had overhead and feathered slightly away from the background. The umbrella acted as an additional rim light which separated my subject from the dark background. Finally, I used a black piece of foam core as a flag to eliminate any light spill onto the background.
