3 Point Lighting Explained in 1 Minute

1/26/2023 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Three-point lighting is a technique used in film and photography to illuminate a subject in a way that creates depth and dimension. It involves using three lights: a key light, a backlight, and a fill light.

The key light is the main light on the subject, and it is typically positioned at a 45-degree angle on one side of their face. To soften the look and remove harsh shadows, a diffuser, such as tissue paper or tracing paper, can be added in front of the key light. For a more cinematic look, the camera can be positioned on the shadowy side of the face.

Pye Jirsa is continuing his exploration of unconventional studio portrait lighting setups. In a previous tutorial, he experimented with a portrait lighting technique that involved placing the main light source behind the subject rather than in front, creating a look that resembles natural backlighting.  The model for this tutorial is Kiara, who is sitting on the same stool as before and in front of the same backdrop, a hand-painted creation by artist Jeremy Ellsworth. He is using the Westcott fj400 and a v-flat for their lighting setup.

Building a Large Format DoF Movie Camera: The impossible 29mm f0.3 Lens

1/02/2023 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

In their journey to capture the impossible image, Nikolas Moldenhauer, CEO & Founder of Media Division, built a unique large format movie camera with a massive Leica lens that is equivalent to a 29mm f0.3 lens, a lens that is absolutely impossible to build.

This allowed them to capture incredibly low light situations and achieve a very shallow depth of field. However, the size and weight of this lens made it difficult to work with, so we decided to combine it with another large format camera and design a precise motorized focus system.
