Joshua Charow: photo book trailer for 'Loft Law. The Last of New York City's Original Artist Lofts'

Joshua Charow spent the past two years creating his first photography book titled 'Loft Law: The Last of New York City's Original Artist Lofts.' The book focuses on artists living under the protection of the Loft Law, enacted in 1982 (Article 7-C of the Multiple Dwelling Law), which granted protection and rent stabilization to thousands of artists residing illegally in commercial and manufacturing zoned lofts in neighborhoods like Soho, Tribeca, and the Bowery after the decline of the manufacturing industry in Manhattan.

Two years ago, Charow discovered a map outlining the remaining protected buildings. He proceeded to ring hundreds of doorbells, capturing the essence of this unique community by photographing and interviewing over 75 artists who continue to inhabit these remarkable lofts.

The photographs within the book offer a glimpse into some of the most beautiful, unique, and hidden artist studios across New York City. 'Loft Law' also features written narratives and personal stories from the diverse group of artists showcased in the book.
