The Arctic Light by TSO Photography

5/31/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

This was filmed between 29th April and 10th May 2011 in the Arctic, on
the archipelago Lofoten in Norway.

My favorite natural phenomenon is one I do not even know the name of, even after talking to meteorologists and astrophysicists I am none the wiser. What I am talking about I have decided to call The Arctic Light and it is a natural phenomenon occurring 2-4 weeks before you can see the Midnight Sun.

The Sunset and Sunrise are connected in one magnificent show of color and light lasting from 8 to 12 hours. The sun is barely going below the horizon before coming up again. This is the most colorful light that I know, and the main reason I have been going up there for the last 4 years, at the exact
same time of year, to photograph. Based on previous experience, I knew this was going to be a very
difficult trip. Having lost a couple of cameras and some other equipment up there before, it was crucial to bring an extra set of everything. I also
made sure I had plenty of time in case something went wrong.
If you can imagine roping down mountain cliffs, or jumping around on slippery rocks covered in seaweed with 2 tripods, a rail, a controller,
camera, lenses, filters and rigging for 4-5 hour long sequences at a time, and then
having to calculate the rise and fall of the tides in order to capture the essence - it all prved bit of a challenge.

And almost as if planned, the trip would turn out to become very
difficult indeed. I had numerous setbacks including: airline lost my
luggage, struggling to swim ashore after falling into the Arctic sea: twice, breaking lenses, filters, tripod, computer, losing the whole dolly rig and controller into the sea, and even falling off a rather tall rock and ending
up in the hospital. As much as I wanted to give up, the best way Out is
always “Through”. I am glad I stuck it through though because there were some amazing sunrises waiting. At 1:06 you see a single scene from day to night to day.

I asked the very talented Marika Takeuchi to specifically compose and
perform a song for this movie, and what she came up with is absolutely remarkable. Thank you very much Marika!

Protagonist BMX: Jimmy Bazan Photoshoot

5/23/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

A while back a photographer friend of mine, Jimmy Bazan, asked to do a photo shoot with the Protagonist crew. Bazan and I went scouting for a location in Downtown, Los Angeles and ran into a crew of graffiti artists tagging up an entire side of a large building. We got to talking to them and they agreed to put our Protagonist BMX logo up on the wall if they could be a part of the shoot.

During the photo shoot, we sat down with Bazan and talked to him about his passion for photography and finding interesting characters for his subjects. A super cool dude, Jimmy is into photography as much as we are into riding. Check him out at JimmyBazan.com

French street photographer in NY: Guillaume Gaudet ( UPDATE )

5/20/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 1 Comments

New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made

This video tries to capture New York City's soul and energy. It was made with a collection of pictures taken during the last four years in New York's five boroughs.
It's an homage to the Empire City, where dreams are made and sometimes fulfilled.
To see more of my work, feel free to go to: guillaumegaudet.com

About me:

I'm a French photographer based in New York for more than 4 years. On arrival, I fell in love with this bustling city. As someone who has always been fascinated by photography, the urban landscape and the melting pot atmosphere of the Big Apple is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. New York is my favoured playground, where I do not tire of photographing the smallest detail. Through light, architecture or a life scene, in each of my photos I try to capture a small part of the city’s soul and energy.

For techniques, I use Lightroom and Photomatix pro when I want to do an HDR picture.

TedxNashville - Jeremy Cowart - A Picture is Worth

5/19/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart tells the story of Help-Portrait and the unexpected impact it had on both sides of the camera. Illustrating how it began as a simple idea that spread to a global movement in just a few months, Jeremy reminds us all that giving within your gifting can change the world.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

5 things to do with your GoPro Camera - Part I

5/15/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

1. GoPro Underwater Shark Experiment

A shark dive in the Bahamas with a GoPro HERO Wide HD camera in a modified underwater housing by Eye of Mine. Aside from placing in the timeline, footage is unmodified.

2.Huge Bike Jump into a Pond 35 feet in the air

For the shots with the camera on the biker, we used an HD Surf GoPro. It was my first time working with a GoPro, and I was super skeptical at first because of the small size of the camera, but with its slomo, and easiness to use after you spend a little of time with it, it worked great. And I was surprised how well it cut with the footage from our Canon cameras. No disappointments. All the GoPro footage was shot at 60fps as well, and 720p.

3. 101 Meters World Record - "Save The Dolphins"

Here is William Trubridge attempting to break the world record of freediving the deepest in history...diving straight down with no fins, no oxygen, no assistance, in an effort to make awareness that we need to protect our wildlife, and specifically our dolphins.

4.  Windsurfing POV on SF Bay

5. Experience Human Flight ( a classic )

We posted weeks before, but I like and I think is a classic that shows us what we can do with a GoPro.

MARWENCOL official theatrical trailer

Marwencol- Trailer, Part 1

Marwencol- Trailer, Part 2

PHOTO THEORY by marwencol

Jeff Malmberg's film Marwencol is a portrait of the artist Mark Hogencamp, a former alcoholic who was beaten into a coma after a night at a bar. Hogencamp recovered with little memory of his past, and as a form of self-therapy, he began reconstructing a new imaginary life through dolls, creating an elaborate drama set in the fictional Belgian war-time town of Marwencol, a simulacrum of his own town of Kingston, N.Y.
