Feathering light is a basic technique that many professional photographers use in order to gain more control over their lighting. Feathering light is one of those things that can be confusing at first, but once mastered is a great way to level up your lighting.

In this video photographer, Ab Sesay goes through the differences from setting your light to a traditional 45-degree angle to a 90-degree angle to slightly past 90-degree and then to a more extreme angle even past that.

Ab Sesay also demonstrates how the differences between lights such as the Photek Spotlighter, Profoto 3ft RF Octa Softbox, Profoto Beauty Dish, and Profoto Magnum reflector, and how each differs in the results you get when feathering.

Ab Sesay also discusses some best practices, such as the type of light stand he recommends using. The use of a light meter for consistent exposures and using flags and V-Flats to control bounce and the overall contrast of the lighting sets.
