Regarding lenses and the Canon vs Nikon debate, I can only concur that the focus breathing of the Nikon and Tamron 70-200's is most frustrating. But for portrait photography Nikon does have some excellent lenses. The 85mm f1.4 and the inexpensive but excellent 85 1.8 work well. If you want longer focal lengths, there is the superb 105 f2 DC and the 135 f2 DC, and for wealthy photog or a lottery winner, there is the 200mm f2 lens.
