To get great sound on location, the lavalier microphone is the go-to microphone of choice by most documentary filmmakers. It's on the person all the time and is able to get great sound if mounted properly.

I've seen far too people mound a big mic on the outside of someone's shirt. - said
Rob Nelson - They don't try to hide it at all. Sometimes that's called for, but it's also good to know that it's fairly easy to hide.

In this short, Rob asked Michael Lile, a sound guy that he has really enjoyed working with this month, to give us 3 tips on lavalier microphones. He suggested...

1) Try mounting the lav with a paper clip so that the mic stays hidden under the shirt.

2) Try mounting the lav so that it goes down the back, instead of down the front.

3) In the wind, use an external wind cover.
