Stop Buying Expensive Camera Bags. Do This Instead!

Camera bags are often either expensive professional models or cheap alternatives with weak padding and poor dividers. For photographers carrying valuable lenses and camera bodies, neither option is ideal.

A simple and effective alternative is to convert a regular duffel bag into a custom camera bag using EVA foam inserts. With a bit of measuring and cutting, you can create a protective interior tailored exactly to your gear.

Start with a sturdy 30–40L duffel bag made from thick canvas or durable fabric. Bags not marketed for photography are often cheaper but still strong enough for heavy equipment. The key component is 10mm EVA foam, which provides structure and shock absorption while remaining lightweight.

Precision Fabrication

Build a simple foam box that fits inside the bag. Measure carefully and cut the EVA foam with a sharp box cutter to achieve clean edges and tight joints. High-density foam creates a rigid interior that protects equipment far better than the soft padding found in many inexpensive camera bags.

Modular Organization

To keep the system flexible, line the inside of the foam box with hook-and-loop (Velcro) strips. Foam dividers with matching Velcro can then be repositioned as your gear changes. This modular setup keeps lenses and accessories separated and secure while allowing the layout to evolve with your kit.
