Lightroom AI: You're using it in the WRONG ORDER

The modern digital darkroom relies heavily on computational power, yet many photographers bypass the critical order of operations required for AI stability.

In Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, the "AI Edit Status" icon serves as a sentinel. When it turns yellow, it signals that the software's AI algorithms—ranging from Denoise AI to Generative Remove—are being processed out of their optimal sequence.

Failing to respect this hierarchy often leads to unpredictable results. A color profile applied early might shift significantly if a high-intensity noise reduction is added later, as the software must re-render the pixels.

This instability can compromise lighting ratios and texture, leading to a final export that differs from the version seen during the editing session.

The Framework: Prepare, Repair, and Finesse

To achieve professional consistency, the workflow must be divided into three distinct phases. The Prepare phase handles the heavy lifting: global AI tasks like Denoise AI, Super Resolution, or HDR processing. These tools should be finalized first to set the stage for all subsequent adjustments.

Next is the Repair phase, utilizing Generative Remove to eliminate distractions. Because the base image has already been "prepared" and denoised, the generative fill can accurately match the surrounding bokeh and grain structure, resulting in a cleaner, more realistic blend.

Finally, the Finesse phase allows for artistic expression. This includes adaptive masks and local adjustments. By waiting until the end to apply these creative layers, you ensure that the AI isn't forced to re-interpret complex selections, maintaining the integrity of your key light and shadow transitions throughout the process.

Pro Tips for AI Workflow Stability:
Global Tasks First: Always run Denoise AI or Raw Details before using the Healing or Remove tools.
Mind the Warning: If the yellow icon appears, click it to update the stack and verify that your colors haven't shifted.
Export Safety: If Lightroom prompts you to update AI edits during export, cancel and review the changes manually first.
Linear Progress: Think of your edit as building layers; changing the bottom layer (noise) always affects the top layer (masks).
