Photoshop: Select and Mask vs. Refine Edge

11/30/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

What is wrong with Select and Mask? Why doesn’t it seem to work like we all wish it would? Are you not using it right, or is it just a broken tool? The answer is that it’s probably a little of both. The tool is deeply flawed in a number of ways and can be incredibly frustrating to work with, but there are some tips and tricks to be able to work with Select and Mask a little more effectively.

In this video I’ll compare four different photos head-to-head cutting out the subject with Select and Mask and then cutting out the subject with Refine Edge. I really want to love Select and Mask, but it breaks my heart over and over again. It’s just not quite where it needs to be for a professional application. It shows great promise, but I really wish Adobe had left the Refine Edge command in place. At least we could pick or choose what works best for us in that case. All things considered, my hope is that this tool will get better and better as new versions of Photoshop arrive.

The rambling video autofocus mega-test

11/29/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

This is the part 1 of the rambling video autofocus mega-test by filmmaker Philip Bloom

Autofocus is starting to actually really work for shooting video and this is a huge step forward for filmmakers like myself especially when shooting with larger sensors, but just how good are they? Can you trust them? In which situation do they work? My series of videos takes a dozen or so cameras and puts them through some ridiculous and some not so ridiculous real word tests.

I have been working on this since August and it has taken up a huge amount of time, a large proportion in editing as it is incredibly fiddly! My original plan was to make it one big video but it was too long. What was needed was to break it down into 3 or 4 chunks, so that is what I have done. Starting today and with a new part every week I present to you my epic autofocus in video test series!

A trip to Rome: Learning to Travel Light by Sean Tucker

11/27/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

All travel videographers and photographers have an obsession, to found the perfect balance between what I could need and which could be the perfect bag for a trip. Casually I was preparing my "perfect video/photo compact bag" (that I will share in a future) when I received an email from our good friend Sean Tucker.

Learning to Travel Light by Sean Tucker

In this video he thinks over the same problem and shares his personal solution: You must learn to travel light.

If you're like me, you struggle to pack when travelling.

I can often be found just a before a trip sitting on the lounge floor, surrounded by gear, trying to talk myself out of taking everything with me, breaking both my back and bank account in luggage fees.

So recently I've challenged myself to travel with as little as possible, and see how much I can do with it, but I'll shut up now and let you watch. Enjoy ( said Sean on his blog  seantucker.photography/blog )

We would like you share with us your perfect bag for travelling to write a little post with the best or more interesting. You can share it on Instagram @iso1200magazine with our tag #iso1200 or #iso1200magazine.

Thanks Sean. Enjoy, and share it on if you found it helpful.

Behind the Scenes with Madison Flowers: Creating Beauty Together

11/26/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Today we have the pleasure to feature photographer Aaron Anderson with his latest project "Madison Flowers" . We hope you enjoy with this behind the scene .

I have posted about topics similar to this before, but for this post I wanted to talk specifically about collaborating with other artists. I think at the heart of this topic is something very simple that I believe in with my whole heart, the idea is this: PEOPLE WANT TO CREATE AND BE A PART OF BEAUTIFUL THINGS.

I always arrive on set early. I mean, I am a punctual person, but that's not why I do it. I actually love being on set, there is something about it...something unlike anything most people will ever experience. Especially in the beginning of my career I loved being around and on set, it didn't matter how much, or even if I was getting paid, I just wanted to be there.

Most of the creatives that I have met feel the same way, especially if they love what they do, we just want to be around it. I bring this up because I think a lot of creatives seem to act as if they are the only ones who feel this way, like they can't ask other people just to create for the pure joy of it if money isn't involved. Granted, I like money, and I think most of the people I work with would like to make money, but at the core of what we do is not money. It's passion and creativity.

With this post I want to encourage you to do something big and scary, and to ask other people to come alongside you to make it a reality. I think you'll be surprised how many people are not only willing, but WANT to help you with your vision. Think big, think dream locations, think beautiful Models, think incredible Make Up Artists, think talented Videographers, think amazing Assistants, you get the idea...THINK BIG! Below are two of the most recent collaborations we have worked on...working with crews of up to 7 people, just to make something beautiful.

Remove Tourists From Photos In Photoshop - Stack Mode Tutorial

11/26/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

In this Photoshop tutorial, PTC are going to use an Image Stack to remove people walking through a scene. This is a great technique that does require some planning and the use of multiple photos, but the results are amazing!

Remove Tourists From Photos In Photoshop - Stack Mode Tutorial

The Image Stack Mode technique is perfect for removing people from crowded places or unwanted objects that are moving through a scene. The Image Stack Mode will take a statistical average of the content found in all the photos. It will keep identical areas and remove everything that changes between the different shots.

It is very likely that cars and people will move and change locations, thus they will be removed when the algorithm is applied, leaving only the background.

What you will learn:

01:39 Load Layers Into Stack
03:20 Auto Align Layers
04:30 Put The Aligned Images into Smart Object
05:02 Apply The Median Stack Mode To The Smart Object
06:00 Statistics Script
07:40 Fixing Image Stack Errors
09:32 Camera Raw Tonal Adjustments
11:00 Automatic Upright
11:50 Crop The Image

Behind The Scenes: Boxing Portraits of Raquel Miller with Profoto D2 Strobes

We have waiting this moment for a long time. Master of light Alexis Cuarezma is back with a new and instructive behind the scenes with the Profoto D2: Boxing Portraits of Raquel Miller.

The reason is, because when I have strobes on location, I can get an extremely blue sky and turn the sun into a nice starburst. That requires a lot of power which is why I was excited to put these 1,000w/s D2’s to use. - said Alexis-

I 3D PRINTED A CAMERA LENS and the Photos are Amazing

11/24/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Our friend Mathieu Stern explains his experience about how he creates his own 3D printed lens:

I always dreamed to create my own lens. Collecting old and weird lenses is a passion of course, but sometimes I want to experiment with my own creations, even if I love to modify old lenses, here I wanted to look into the future.

Wouldn' it be great if you could create a lens from scratches ? Wouldn't it be fun to experiment for really cheap ?

Well, as I never really learned how to make 3D models on a computer, I started by making a cardboard first prototype with a found lens from 1890 I had in a box. It was ugly and not easy to use but I was able to focus and take the measurements I needed to create a 2D design.

After getting a lot of " NO" from many french 3D printers (I must say I had no money to pay anyone so it was quite complicated to motivate someone), I saw some hope.

I met Arnault Coulet, CEO of a French 3D printing agency called FABULOUS. His team and he designed the 3D prototype and printed the lens. Luckyly for us, he saw all the crazy potential and fun we could create with this project.

I worked with them on designing a lens that could be mounted directly on my camera.

Once I received the 3D printed parts from Arnault, I saw my crazy lens coming to "life" and... it worked !!

I had in my hand a monocle lens (meaning it has just one glass lens in the front) and in my estimation (I did the maths), it is a 135mm 1.8 lens.

I needed to give it a real first test, so I mounted it on my fullframe mirrorless camera

So I went to one of the most incredible place in France : Le Mont St Michel, which is one of the official World's Wonders.

Drone Flash with the Elinchrom ELB 400 by David Robinson

11/21/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Today we have the pleasure to feature photographer David Robinson with his latest project 'Drone Flash with the Elinchrom ELB 400'. We hope you enjoy his behind the scene look into drones, lights and photography

What if you were able to place light wherever your mind wanted to? David Robinson followed his vision and attached an ELB 400 to a drone in a visionary MTB photo shoot!

The Start

The story begins about 2.5 years ago, when being given a tour of Red Bull's generously stocked Equipment Pool, amongst the plethora of cameras and endless walls of lenses, I was shown a custom Octocopter. Designed to carry such cameras as RED's Scarlet, at a time when the only cameras flying around at this time were GoPros.

"I wanted to take the idea as far as I could!"

© David Robinson | The Octacopter in action with a battery pack and 1x head.

The main thing about this piece is the muscle behind it, and it opened a lot of doors regarding what equipment could be used. I wanted to take the idea as far as I could right away, I knew that a hot shoe flash just wouldn't cut it since one of my favorite things to do is add to the daylight already in the scene.

The light where needed

The existence of this drone got the gears turning in my head. Not being a filmmaker, my idea for exactly how to use it was motivated by allowing me to get light into places it's not typically possible to do so.

© Liam Joyce / Marco Leiter

Being a biker myself, instantly I thought of slopestyle MTB, since the prominence of the jumps usually limits a photographer to placing any additional lighting behind the jumps and lighting the subject from below.

This isn't ideal since the eyes and brain can recognise, even subconsciously, that something that isn't quite right since light very rarely occurs from beneath in nature.

The ELB 400 form factor

I touched on some of these points in the video, but the ELB 400 itself was a huge catalyst in making this shoot happen.

"Get light into impossible places."

The form factor, in that it's a separate pack and head system, allowed us to distribute the weight optimally in the center of the drone. With a head weighing in at a mere 250g, it's no problem if this is off axis as the drone self-levels itself.

© Liam Joyce / Marco Leiter
Not only was this package exactly suited to what we needed, but with the Skyport Plus HS transmitter allowing me to change my settings while it was airborne, made it extremely user-friendly.

Of course, the Hi-Sync functionality to allow me to reign in the ambient light, allowing the rider to pop.

What next?

With my idea down in pixels now, it was quite satisfying but at the same time not quite as outstanding as I'd hoped. The main image worked perfectly but I realise now that it might not be so obvious to the untrained eye.

Technically, everything worked as expected, and in that respect as a proof of concept it was a success. The next step for me is to take it to another sport where it will make more of an impact!

© David Robinson
With such packs as the ELB 400, coupled with the trend of the commercial drones getting stronger and more intelligent, I can't help but dream of what exactly might be possible in the future. Take the newest drones and their subject tracking ability. How about a 3-point light setup that leaves your bag and tracks your subject automatically? All in an integrated and dedicated flash drone package?

Sign me up!

© David Robinson
Keep your eyes out because this is going to be the next big thing.
Note: The photos were altered in post-production to fit to the Red Bull branding guidelines
