Chinese Rocket Fireball Over California

7/29/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

While CreativeLive crew was filming a star photography course for Night Photography Week in the Alabama Hills, they saw something amazing, and were able to capture it on film.

The fireball streaking across the sky was the largest, brightest, and longest that any of them had ever seen. It began to break up slowly as it entered the atmosphere, and lit up the entire sky. It came from the West over the Sierra mountains (Mt. Whitney), and streaked across the entire night sky to the East, towards Nevada. About 5 minutes after they stopped filming, they heard a significant boom far off into the distance.

How to Use Light Direction to Emphasize Details in your Apparel/Garments

7/27/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Natural daylight has one main direction, dictated by the position of the Sun. Replicate this by altering the balance between individual lights in your setup.

Great lighting brings out the best in your products and shows off your nice styling.A versatile lighting setup should be arranged symmetrically around the product area giving you consistency in color, detail and freedom to make adjustments.

By altering the balance between the individual lights in your setup, you can achieve dramatically different styles. When combined with diffusers and reflectors, your creative possibilities become almost infinite.

Portrait Retouching Tip: Fix Shiny Skin in Photoshop & Lightroom

7/23/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Shine is great on silver and gold but not so much on your portrait subjects face. It is not too difficult to fix oily skin in Photoshop. Stay tuned and Joe Edelman will show you a super quick retouching tip to eliminate shiny skin or oily skin in both Photoshop and Lightroom.

It’s summer time… you shoot a wedding or an outdoor portrait and because of the heat your subject has shiny skin or your new to lighting and haven’t quite perfected things yet and you have a great shot – but your subjects skin is shiny – it's actually really easy to fix in post production.

A few quick reminders… FIX it in post is NEVER the best solution – so as you are practising and learning your craft – ALWAYS strive to get it right in camera.

Portrait Retouching Tip: Fix Shiny Skin in Photoshop & Lightroom

Also – if you are doing portraits or headshots or modeling shots and you really want to up your game – lighting is just a piece of the puzzle – you need to find a great makeup artist to really get your images to a pro level.

Ok – to the retouching tip…

Here is a great portrait that was posted in Joe Edelman´s Facebook group by Stig-Arve Holmem from Norway. They have a very pretty young subject with lots of personality but no makeup artist and the image is just slightly over exposed, so they wind up with shiny skin in the forehead, nose and tops of the cheeks.

So do we scrap the image? Heck no – it’s a great shot and easily repaired.

If you photograph people - Joe Edelman would love to have you as a member of his Facebook Group:https://www.facebook.com/groups

The Power of Screenings

7/23/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Feature documentary editor Kevin Klauber walks us through how to hold screenings of your projects, and why screenings are important. Whether you’re an accomplished filmmaker, or just getting started in film school, every filmmaker will make some questionable decisions in the creative process.

Everyone can misjudge how their film will actually impact an audience... In fact, making bad decisions is often part of the process! However, learning from these bad decisions and correcting course is how we become better storytellers. This video is about taking the time to learn what's working in your film (and what's not) by screening your work.

Want to screen your work, but aren't sure who to share it with? Come check out the "Critique Me!" Section in their forums: http://bit.ly/RJFS_CritiqueMe

Or ask them questions directly here: http://j.mp/PowerOfScreenings

4 Tips to Helps You Shoot Video to Tell a Story

7/21/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Ever been in the field and really didn't know what you needed to shoot to tell that great story? The action was happening all around you so you took a few shots. Then in the edit, it was kind of hard to actually tell your story. Here are 4 things everyone should shoot for.

Also, I can't really take credit for these great tips. Trenton and Phil at GoPro were the first to communicate these to me. I thought they were extremely useful and wanted to share them as well. Also a big Kuddos to Seth, Kevin and Andrew - our fellow correspondents. Check out their channels below.

We spent last week in San Diego with the GoPro team. We got to pick and choose between a variety of GoPro mounts and picked out a few pretty sweet ones we wanted to share with you.

How to Use Face-Aware Liquify in Photoshop

7/20/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Adobe just released a new version of Photoshop CC2015, version 5.0, and with it come some great new tools. In today’s episode, learn how to adjust facial features using Face-Aware Liquify.

How to Open Face-Aware Liquify

First, duplicate the layer containing the subject you want to edit. Go to ‘Filter - Liquify’ to open the Liquify dialogue box, and the Face-Aware Liquify tool will analyze the face or faces in your image for editing. This option will only be available on the latest release of Photoshop, so if you haven’t upgraded your software, be sure to do so.

How to Edit a Face with Face-Aware Liquify
Next, either click and drag the Face-Aware Liquify tool in the preview box, or adjust the sliders in the dialogue box to modify a feature. You’ll have access to the eyes, nose, mouth, and even features like face width and forehead height. The Face-Aware Liquify tool will resize only the parts of the face you want to focus on, making it a handy tool for subtle retouching or creating a silly caricature.

How to Edit Multiple Faces with Face-Aware Liquify
You can also edit multiple faces in an image by selecting the face you want in the drop down box and editing the facial features the same way as above.

If you ever want to undo an edit you made, you can always go back into the Liquify tool and set the effect intensity back to zero.

Behind the scenes of 12K Timelapse with the Phase One XF 100MP

7/19/2016 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Follow Joe Capra of Scientifantastic.com, in this behind the scenes video about his production of the PHASED | LA Timelapse video shot natively in 12K resolution entirely on the Phase One XF IQ3 100 megapixel camera .

That is three times the resolution of existing 4K Ultra HD content, and each and every single frame of this film is 100 megapixels. With the latest software update to the XF system Phase One added a new timelapse mode which allows users to easily shoot extreme resolution timelapses.

Having the ability to shoot in such extreme resolution allows you much more creative freedom and flexibility in post production, and this film's purpose is to demonstrate that. You can punch in extremely far into a scene while maintaining massive amounts of detail.
