Unveiling the Secret: How-to Create a Simple Cinematic Headshot
At the heart of many cinematic lighting setups is the rim light, or backlight. This light, strategically placed behind your subject, defines their contours and separates them from the background, adding a striking visual dimension.
To achieve an even more dramatic and professional effect, consider a specular backlight equipped with a half-cut CTO gel and a grid. This combination not only creates a halo of light around the hair but also introduces a subtle gleam that enhances texture and volume, delivering that coveted touch of glamour in studio portraits.
Filmed at my studio in Franklin, TN (just outside of Nashville), this quick lighting breakdown shows how I build depth using a specular rim light, gelled background light, and a soft key. I also share a vintage-inspired lens trick that creates a subtle glow without compromising sharpness perfect for giving your headshots a stylized touch. - said Jeff Carpenter -
