Why Blinkies Can Mislead You

Highlight warnings often appear long before any real detail is lost. Because they’re triggered by a processed JPEG, they tend to be overly cautious. Following them blindly usually means darker files, noisier shadows, and more work in post.

 

Find Your Sensor’s Real Limit

A simple exposure test—pushing past the blinkies and checking the Raw file in Lightroom—reveals how much highlight detail is actually recoverable. In many cases, you can safely overexpose by one or even two stops without clipping real data.

 

Shoot With Intent, Not Fear

Treat blinkies as guidance, not rules. Ignore them when they appear in unimportant areas, trust the histogram instead, and learn how far your specific camera can be pushed. That’s how you maximize image quality and creative control.
