Seattle Seahawks team photographer Rod Mar offers three tips for better football photography in this video short from Sports Shooter Academy VIII in Orange County, Calif. September 2011.
Rod Mar has worked as a photographer for 25 years, specializing in sports photography.
After stint at the short-lived “Inside the Seahawks,” a fan-zine
where his first boss was NFL great Kenny Easley, Mar received an
internship at the Seattle Times and joined the staff permanently two
years later. He worked as a staffer there for nearly two decades. Now he
has returned to his Seahawks roots as a team photographer.
He has covered major sporting events such as the Super Bowl, the NBA
Finals, the NCAA Final Four, numerous bowl games and golf’s major
championships.(*)

We were gunning for nothing less than visual impact so we headed out to
an old motocross track to stir up some dusty drama.

Haiti has always been a place of misery and pain. It's a place of
constant suffering,Arriving in Haiti, going to the morgue and seeing
thousands of bodies piled on top of each other,Walking among the dead,It
was like being in Dante's inferno.

Presentation of Photojournalism Behind the Scenes, an auto-critical
photo essay showing the paradoxes of conflict-image production and
considering the role of the photographer in the events.
This project was awarded the Photodreaming Contest organized by Forma
Foundation in which I was then selected by Denis Curti, the director of
Contrasto (the major photo-agency in Italy, which represents Magnum's
work in the country and for which the top Italian photographers work) to
shoot an assignment for the prestigious agency.

I had the opportunity to shoot Rafael Marquez in Mexico City for the
FMF. He is a world class soccer player for Mexico and a great guy. We
were going to shoot several shots that would need to freeze him in mid
air as he kicked the ball.
We had limited time with him so it was
necessary that things were planed out and ready to go when he arrived.
We took two Hensel speed max heads that have the fastest flash duration
of any mono block head available. The goal was to use them as our key
lights and freeze his action in mid air.
We shot background plates the
day before at the ruins outside of Mexico City for him to be retouched
into. The idea being famous soccer players in action shots at different
iconic sites of Mexico. The retouching is worth taking a look at on our
Facebook page. I got Julene to talk about how she did the work. Go to
www.facebook.com/theslantedlens1 to see her video. It was a great shoot
and I hope you enjoy the video.

We tour WhatWasThere.com, a website that weaves historical photos through Google Street View.
by Brian Lehrer Live
The WhatWasThere project was inspired by the realization that we
could leverage technology and the connections it facilitates to provide a
new human experience of time and space – a virtual time machine of
sorts that allows users to navigate familiar streets as they appeared in
the past.
The premise is
simple: provide a platform where anyone can easily upload a photograph
with two straightforward tags to provide context: Location and Year. If
enough people upload enough photographs in enough places, together we
will weave together a photographic history of the world (or at least any
place covered by Google Maps). So wherever you are in the world, take a
moment to upload a photograph and contribute to history! (*)
