Balancing Sunlight and Strobes: A Simple 3-Step Outdoor Lighting Setup

Photographing portraits outdoors requires a delicate balance between natural ambient light and artificial fill. In this practical tutorial, photographer John Gress takes viewers on location to a beach portrait shoot, demonstrating how to seamlessly blend sunlight with a single off-camera strobe.

By positioning the subject with her back to the sun, the natural light serves as a rims light while a 70 cm octabox softens the key light to match the overcast sky.

To achieve clean background isolation, high-speed sync becomes necessary to preserve the sky's rich detail without blowing out highlights.

Gress demonstrates how shooting at shutter speeds up to 1/8000s and wide apertures like f/2.0 creates a flattering shallow depth of field.

The "1-2-3" Exposure Formula

Establishing ambient exposure outdoors is simplified into a straightforward three-step order of operations. First, select the desired aperture to control depth of field; second, adjust the shutter speed until the background exposure looks balanced;

Finally, dial in the flash power to illuminate the subject correctly. Keeping ISO locked at 100 ensures maximum dynamic range and image clarity throughout the session.

Wireless Tethering and Workflow Efficiency

Maintaining an efficient feedback loop during location shoots is significantly enhanced by wirelessly tethering to an iPad using Capture One Mobile.

Setting the camera's Wi-Fi access point to 5GHz rather than 2.4GHz dramatically improves image transfer speeds, allowing immediate client review and pose adjustments right on set.

Practical Location Advice: Always secure modifiers with heavy-duty sandbags when shooting outdoors. If sandbags are unavailable, opt for a heavy steel C-stand over lightweight aluminum to prevent wind gusts from tipping over softboxes near water or hard ground.
