Gao'An Faces

Gao'An Faces is an experimental emotive portrait collage collaboration between motion artist Abram Hodgens and photographer Tim Franco.

My desire was to showcase the individual's personality and personal expression; for the actor to let loose and emote freely. The lighting that Tim devised captures a raw honesty and intimacy in the subject's faces. Their expressions invite the viewer to personal interpretation and reflection.

Setup a "one light stand" ... in the hotel? ...One Light Photography

http://SmokingStrobes.com: Now why doing it on the floor when hotels are usually known for their comfortable king-sized double beds? Because this time, we wanted the photographs to look like studio photos. For our one light photography we manufactured a black floor by covering the floor with the black covers of my two collapsible reflectors. This gave us nearly 4 square meters of black ground. Sounds too small? Well, then let's use the American way of saying it: Nearly 45 square feet of black floor - sounds much better :-)

Photojournalism and Photography Techniques: Tips From Ed Kashi

Award-winning photojournalist Ed Kashi joins us today on the Marc Silber Show to share tips on advancing your photography. His photojournalism work has covered a wide range of global issues and been featured in magazines such as The National Geographic, TIME, and Newsweek. Ed sees himself as a long-form visual storyteller and dedicates himself to telling stories of social or political significance.

He often refers to the phrase "candid intimacy" for his work - people often look at his work and ask "How do you get so close to the people, but make it look like they don't know you're there?" When a photo achieves "candid intimacy," the observer is able to see into the soul of the subject. It is tough to achieve candid intimacy, especially when people are adverse to having their photos taken.

More and more of his work is being shot from his hip or his shoulder, to avoid provoking people who are not favorable to the lens. Sometimes the best magic appears in images that are shot without staring into the viewfinder. Ed emphasizes that it is crucial to maintain an open heart and open mind, instead of settling for what one sees on the surface. Cameras are a passport into another world that you would never experience otherwise.

Jose Flores | Habana Estudio | Interview

Thanks to our collaborators:

| Ferrer Video Productions Ferrer Video Productions
| Gabriel Timothée GT Modern Creations
Habana Estudio is Jose Flores a very popular and amazing photographer in Puerto Rico. He is our ISO 1200 photographer.

ISO 1200: Hi, Jose. Could you explain what kind of photographer are you?

Jose Flores: I am a Photojournalists I like my pictures tell a story

ISO 1200:Ok, and we take a look to your amazing pictures, and the question is how do you get it?

JF: First I put my heart into all I do, I like to be careful with lighting, because photography is light and I do not  retouch my pictures, they are natural.  Maybe I can retouch a 5% that all pictures need, because the camera can not feel as the human eye.

ISO 1200: Do you think that to be a good photographer you need anything special?

JF: You only need have an eye for photography and an equipment  that it makes you feel comfortable, of course I prefer always Canon, jaja.

ISO 1200:About your camera, what do you use now? And do you think that is important an expensive camera or/and expensive lens to get nice pictures?

JF: I have  three cameras, (1) 1D Mark IV and  (2) 1D Mark III  and a  40 D as backup camera,  I think to take a nice picture you can use any camera, but to get amazing pictures you need the best camera and lens, because this equipment have a better image quality, for example I bought 1 D Mark III in  2007 and today the image quality  it is better than a  5D or 7D .I bought the 40D  in 2007, but it is not enough to me  when I use high ISO as Mark III, you know what I said.

ISO 1200: What is more important for you, the camera or the lens?

JF:Both, and the better is  L series from Canon.

ISO 1200:Please, what is your favorite lens?

JF: 24/70 f/2.8 Canon

ISO 1200:Sorry, but in your video you use a Canon 10-22 mm, why and how do you use it? Because many people think that is not good to shoot  portraits

JF:This lens 10/22 f/3.5 Canon , it is not a L Lens but you can transform a small place in a big and beautiful scene but the problem  it is only compatible with 40D cause it is not a full frame lens.

ISO 1200:What kind of light diffusers do you use and why?

JF: I use the Gary Fong reporter Flash Diffuser, first because it gives me freedom to move and it is better than other diffusers like umbrellas, and you have to believe me, his assistants appreciate it. I combine this with Quantum Turbo 3 battery and I have 3000 shots and  it is light and reliable. With this combo you have not problems with strong air like with umbrellas.

ISO 1200:In the video, You use a very high aperture, 20 and 22,why?

JF:In this specific shoot I used a high aperture because when I took the pictures it was high noon sun. I only use 2.8 it is an emergency, I do not like to diffuse the backgrounds, it is not my style, I try to mix the place and the subject, then I need a great DOF and usually I use f/4.5 and up, of course the optimal aperture it is 5.6 and up. But I need more time to explain this.

ISO 1200:Could you tell us what is your favorite picture and why?

JF:In this shooting  I love the picture of  fake rain falling on the model, it was a hard job, no hacks, only a professional spraying equipment.
The sun did not help us, and I had to use  the flash on full power, and of course I got the picture, but the flash, booom, exploted, jeje, but that it is a part of a funny session.

ISO 1200:How do you found your incredible locations?

JF: Many times I have a lucky day and casually  I found it and sometimes suggestions of friends.

ISO 1200:What is your favorite photographer?

JF: Mike Colon

Oh, a great choice , Jose,  thank you very much.

Now some Jose´s pictures:

Light Master Dean Chamberlain

Well, as you know we try to found BTS videos about light painting, but I have to tell you it is not easy.

It was a surprise when I found today this brand new video about light master Dean Chamberlain.

Dean Chamberlain is a photographer who specializes in unique lighting effects and extended exposure times. Famous models for his pictures sit for up to five hours as he leaves the camera shutter open and "paints" the space around them with carried and projected lights of various colors and shapes, creating luminous and colorful images. His technique was described by one of his exhibitions as "Painting With Light Through Time and Space." (*)

The Sartorialist

I have been following to  The Sartorialist for a two years, when I discovered it in ffffound,  an image bookmarking. I did not know who was behind this website.

When I watched  this video a few days ago in others blogs, I was not sure to include it in the magazine, because it could give the sense that we copy the contents.

But yesterday, when I was reading the Chase Jarvis´blog, I watched it three o four times more and then I thought I had to analyze it. And the results is here.

He uses only natural light, he visualizes the scene and he selects the perfect angle, that in this case is against the sun.

Scott uses his hand as a gobo to prevent the flare.

He get a visual line with the cars on the right and the sun light defines the woman against the background.
To get a perfect exposure of the model, it is probably that Scott uses in the camara  the spot metering. With this he got  not underexpose the woman.

With this technique he got that ethereal pictures.

But, if you believe that it is not enough, I think so too.

Here you have the book.

The most important thing is that he only uses avaible light, no flash, no lights, only he plays with locations and how he founds the perfect angle to shot the model.

Lily Aldridge by Chris Colls for Vegas Magazine

Today, we present another classic photographer, Chirs Colls   that works to Harper´s Bazaar, Vogue, GQ or Cosmopolitan.

The video is a new upload by Nardeep Khurmi   about the Behind the Scenes of the Lily Aldridge cover shoot for Vegas Magazine.

Here you have the most important frames.

We have three lights, a big profoto octobox as key light on the righ, a beauty dish on the top, and another profoto  down on the left as fill light.

I supose that with this light Chris removes the shadows of the face ( for example behind the eyes).
He get a clean image. Also use a gobo on the left to remove flares.

About the model, Lily Aldridge, in this picture you can see the position in the background. She is not close it.

Chris put the light very close to him to get a frontal light.
Here we have the lights boom.
Take a look to the light before and after.

And this is the final image. ( link  from this blog ). This image has copyright.

Here you have the full article in vegas magazine.

Chris got a clean and beautiful image. To know more about Chris Colls you can visit his website  or to read this interview in pedestrian.tv

The photographer, James Bort,  use avaible light, maybe a high ISO, speed 1/200 or 1/320 ( aperture priority) and allways 1.4 ( I think is a 50 mm ).

With this light is important to grip the camera. He do it.

Visit the James Bort website|blog , indispensable.
