Steadycam building process. Short version.

3/30/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Home built steadycam.

All parts are made from 4x2cm square steel tube, cut, bent and drilled. The arms are made from 1x1cm square, steel tube, cut and drilled. All joints are the same, 0,6mm steel tube and 0,4 bolt throuhg it. That´s how it can turn freely with little to no wear (if lubricated properly before use).

The springs are custom made in a little shop in madrid, stronger than actually neeeded but I think it´s better that way, it runs smoother if the operator has to exert a bit of force, if it´s too loose you can see the movement in the recording. This model allows to use two weaker springs instead of one or a combination.

Almost everything is adjustable, the camera support has 7cm of play to adjust different weight lenses and centers of gravity, the camera, handle and weight height can be adjusted to fit camera needs.

The next step is to modify the weight platform so it´s not centered so we can use "asymetric" camera setups (ie, attached LED lighting, microphones and such).
It´s tested up to 2,5 Kg but not really usable, 1,5 should be a reasonable limit.

DitoGear PortaSlider Prototype Testing

3/27/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

A few days ago we headed for a short trip to test out a first prototype of the DitoGear PortaSlider which is a new, modular timelapse slider dedicated to entry-level an professional timelapse shooters.

We wanted to check how the concepts worked and gave a hard-testing run to the new product. With a total of 14 one-meter track units and 2 trolley designs to test out we had a lot of fun!

The track joints seem to work flawlessly and really precisely even on such long track. The trolley need some refinements and this week we're going to test out a new, improved design.

Preparing for shots with a 14 meter track takes some time, but it is definitely worth effort giving a whole bunch of new creative options for shooting.

Now about the slider at a glance:
- continuous and and drive-shoot-drive mode, 2 way w/ shutter control
- modular track design (0.5m, 1.0m, 2.0m modules)
- controller and user interface integrated with motor and trolley
- very basic video mode w/optional controller (left, right, speed adjustment)
- horizontal & diagonal operation w/ lightweight cameras

- option of connecting the OmniSlider controller for a full-blown set of features (planned)
- very (!) affordable price (to be announced soon)

How To Photograph Group Portrait by Jared Polin

3/25/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

Jared and Greg are two photographers with a funny blog http://froknowsphoto.com about photography and nikon cameras. And of course, the Grandma.

Here two tutorials about "How To Photograph Group Portrait"

http://froknowsphoto.com/how-to-take-group-portrait-photographs/

In FroKnowsPhoto Show #6 Jared and I discussed group portraits since we had photographed a big group of about 200 people at UG7. He had a cherry picker and the perfect conditions for it.
Unfortunately most of the time that is not the case. We need to pose everyone correctly in order to have them looking their best. In my video I discuss how to position everyone so their faces can be seen, higher angles, large and small group portraits and a few other small tips which make a huge difference in the overall photograph.

http://froknowsphoto.com/?p=3120

At UG7 I had to take a large group photo of almost all of the attendees. This is a behind the scenes video of how everything was captured and how we got to the final photo below. Greg was recoding video with the Nikon D7000 and I had on my Sony Wireless mic to capture all my audio.

At the end of the video I show you how I edited this photo and yes I ended up using fill light this time and it made the image much stronger. Be sure to click the image below to see the final full res jpeg which was exported from lightroom.

NEX FS 100 Video Blog

3/23/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

This is a Worldwide Exclusive.

Not only did I contribute to the design of this camera but we managed to get a prototype and shoot a music video a few weeks ago. I believe we are the first independent team to shoot anything with the NEX FS100.

When I got the call we were told we could have the camera for a little over 24hrs.

We wanted to do more than just simply test it. But also we wanted to see what we could get out of the camera with stock lenses and recording internally.

So James from hangmanstudios.com teamed up with Den from fstopacademy.com and we pulled off this amazing shoot in 48hrs. Needless to say we didn't get much sleep but we valued the opportunity and wanted to shoot as much as we could in as many environments as we could.

We especially wanted to push the low light capability and use the in camera media. It shoots to SD cards, Sony Memory sticks and also has a 128GB FMU which is a solid state pack that integrates with the camera and will give up to 10 hrs record time at 24mb/s AVC HD.

We shot everything at 24mb/s AVC HD and ingested into FCP and transcoded to ProRes 422 using Log and transfer.

Shot over a 36 hr period in one weekend on one of only 2 prototype NEX FS 100 Cameras in the world.

We used 3 lenses:
A Sony Alpha 50mm f1.4 with alpha to emount adaptor
A E mount 16mm f2.8
The Stock lens 18-200 f3.5-5.6

For more information on the camera you can go here sony.co.uk/biz/content/id/1237480587665?en_GB=

This lesson will help you understand the many uses of the Beauty Dish.
I had the opportunity to shoot Liz Hernandez for her 2011 calendar. She was great to work with. We shot at Jamie Foxx's home which was a spectacular place.

He was very gracious to allow us to have the run of his home. I used the Beauty Dish in almost very shot. I will break down the images form Liz's shoot to help gain a better understanding of how to use a Beauty Dish. We also set up a target on the wall at the studio to illustrate the pattern a dish creates.

Nelson, BC Canadian Business Magazine Photo Shoot (Update)

3/19/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

by Darren Hull Studios Inc. |   Final Pictures

Kim Thomas describes the shoot:

"You fly today, you die today."

These are the words we were greeted with Sunday morning when asking the pilot his thoughts on us flying to the top of a 7300 foot mountain in a blizzard. I can appreciate his honesty, but it did give me an anxious knot in my stomach knowing the pilot wasn't the one making the decision on whether we'd fly or not. John Buffery was.

At the end of February Darren asked Dustin Senos and myself to accompany him on a snowy journey. We would help him take photos of John Buffery (aka Buff), one of BCs two avalanche experts. The shoot would take place in Nelson, BC on top of a mountain. Excited for an entirely new opportunity, the three of us began our journey out on Saturday morning.

Although I have already met my intermediate Kickstarter goal, I am still short of my $25,000 budget for expenses for two weeks of shooting in the highly contaminated Exclusion Zone (a car and driver alone costs $600/day). Therefore, I still need your help! I have until March 21st to collect donations.

Thank you for your continued interest in this project, and keep spreading the word!

Biography

Originally from Australia, I was born to a German Father and Australian mother. This fortunate mix makes me both highly professional and efficient but also very laid back.

Starting at the tender age of 17, I briefly considered a career in law but decided to follow my heart, I haven’t looked back.

After 20years in this business I still genuinely love what I do. This might be why I tend to work with clients over a number of years. My enthusiasm comes through in every commission.

VIV Mag Case Study: A Motion Cover and Interactive Spread for iPad

3/15/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

The studio concepted and produced a successful motion feature spread for the March/April 2010 edition of VIV Magazine. VIV Mag is an entirely digital publication geared towards women. The feature is presented through a series of scenes in a noir-style apartment building for an article on women’s common sex fears. We move from one apartment scene to the next, each one representing a different fear while the viewer is presented with the article to read within the scene.

With the introduction of the iPad weeks away from the release of the issue, the project took advantage of the new technology to incorporate motion in a digital magazine and explore how that motion content would enhance a reader’s experience. This presented a new and engaging way to view content previously only reserved for print.

This feature not only brought significant attention to VIV Mag, which had been otherwise unknown but it garnered over a quarter million plays in the first few days of its release- a sizable amount for a magazine with a circulation in the tens of thousands.

It was also picked up on numerous sites such as Gizmodo, Engadget, AppleInsider, and Motionographer. The New York Times and Huffington Post wrote 3 articles, one of which states “Wired and Alexx Henry Photography are fearless in their vision. They fully comprehend what a magazine or an advertisement will look like on the iPad platform.”

The icing on the cake was a call from executives at Apple, to say congratulations on the beautiful work and that the entire Apple campus was enthralled.

photography tip 04: Sharpness

When it comes to publishing photos for the web, i always have a sharpen pass done for each one i upload, as well as reducing the image size of course. my process for this is simple. first of all i avoid over sharpening: it tends to transform the image in a pile of unnecessary visual noise. easy to spot when it's the case. it needs to remain subtle. Secondly, my initial process is to create a duplicate layer and paste the photo on it. then apply a sharpen pass (most of the time i use "smart sharpen"). and finally erase the effect on that second layer in areas where the sharpen isn't needed. especially on blurry areas. sharpening Out of focus areas of a photo is never needed.

High Speed Photo with Arduino

3/14/2011 ISO 1200 Magazine 0 Comments

This was a little experiment we did to try to capture the exact moment when a drop splashes on water and to catch a balloon wen it has just bursted.

We rigged up a Light Dependent Resistor, a laser and a microphone to an Arduino and programmed it to pick up variation in light and sound peaks to trigger the photography flashes.
Then we went in a dark room, set up the camera in "bulb" mode and let the flashes do the work.

Watch the video to find out how it all worked out!
